Does anyone actually use encyclopaedias anymore?

Got a question? Where do you go to find out the answer? ‘Just Google it.’
Worldwide, Google processes over 44,000 search queries on average per second, which equates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year. That’s a lot of searching! But what is it about the search engine giant that isn’t so clear on the surface? We put together a snazzy infographic to give you some facts about Google you may have otherwise never known..

#1 Back in 1996 Google used to be called Backrub. Yep, you heard it right..Backrub. It originally operated on Stanford servers, but eventually took up too much bandwith. Google bought the domain to rename themselves from Backrub to Google on September 15th, 1997.

#2 Google plans to scan all known 129 million unique books before 2020. Can you even begin to imagine what 129 million books would look like?!

#3 Google prefers dogs to cats. Yup, their company code of conduct actually states that Google are a dog company, even though they do actually like cats. Me-ow.

#4 The domain name ‘GoogleSucks.com’ is owned by Google themselves alongside 16,203 other domains. But can you blame them? It’s best they get in there first, before all those internet trolls do!

#5 16% of searches done on Google everyday are ones that they have never seen before. I’m not even going to try to picture what some of these searches could be.

#6 Google hired a camel to create the street view of a desert, which makes sense really. I just feel sorry for the poor guy who had to walk around with it all that way.

#7 Microsoft pays you to use Bing instead of Google..With bing rewards! This feature, however, is not yet available in the UK. *sad face*

#8 Google’s first tweet was ‘I’m feeling lucky’ written in Binary Code. The tweet was sent in February 2009, and for all you arguably geeky computer whizzes out there.. “I’m 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01110101 01100011 01101011 01111001 00001010.”

#9 Google is the most visited website in the world. Take that Facebook..

#10 Google got its name by accident. The founders accidentally misspelled ‘googol’ which refers to the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes. I’m kinda glad really, I’m not quite sure they would have had as much relevant traffic with a domain name like ‘Backrub’.
